A letter on engraving to the Golden Globes

Dear Golden Globes,

We are writing to offer the services of Engravers Guild to assist in the finishing of your statuette awards.

It was with sadness that we read this week of your tragic engraving of the prize for Jon Hamm. The Mad Men star and aficionado of cool admitted to Vanity Fair this week that his first Golden Globe in 2008 was delivered bearing a mis-spelling of his name.

We would therefore like to draw your attention to our globally renowned Preview Engraving Function, demonstrated on all engraved gifts. This beautifully visualises exactly how an engraving will appear, so should ensure that no mistakes be made on our personalised gifts.

If you would like to take us up on this offer, then please do not hesitate to reach us on our Contact page.

Yours faithfully,

The Engravers Guild Team

P.S. We prefer the BAFTAS

The value of an engraved gift

engraved gift spoon

At Engravers Guild, all of our engraved gifts are carefully selected and are of the highest quality in finish and design.

However, we have always believed that the real value of our gifts is in the engraving – that personal touch which makes the item totally unique and captures a moment forever.

We were therefore not surprised to read about an engraved item up for auction, which surpassed all estimated bids.

A silver spoon that dates from 1684 had a pre-sale estimate of £1,000, but went under the hammer this week for £11,500.

The engraving on the handle reads: “This Spoon was bought upon the Frozen Thames * January:28:1683/4”. It was made to record the fair that took place on the Thames when the river froze.

We could not agree with Alex Butcher, a silver specialist, more: “The engraving on it makes all the difference”.

Hello 2016!

New Year in London

The Engravers Guild team wishes everyone a Happy New Year.

Expectations are for a big 12 months ahead. There is the Queen’s 90th birthday, the Rio Olympics and high hopes for team GB, the European football championships, and not to mention a possible referendum on the EU.

But for many, the most important events this year will be those anniversaries, celebrations, personal milestones and family occasions.

Engravers Guild will be here to help you mark them in a special way with engraved gifts, and we hope 2016 brings you all you wish for.

Merry Christmas

The last items have been engraved, the last gifts wrapped, and the last parcels despatched.

All that leaves for us this year, is to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

We hope that the Engravers Guild gifts we delivered will be much-loved this Christmas, and will be helping one or two smiles around the country at this special time of the year.

Engravings that last millennia

Engravers Guild gifts are designed to last a lifetime. We have always said that one of the beauties of an engraving, is that it makes an indelible impression that can capture a moment.

If ever there was any doubt to our claim, then read the story this week about a set of engravings from the Ice Age.

At a site in Jersey, engraved fragments have been unearthed which are estimated to date back 14,000 years. If so, it would be the oldest known art in the UK.

So when you next choose to give an engraved gift, take time over what you write – it could still be around in 14,000 years from now.

The new face of engraving

With Engravers Guild only recently launching the new online store, we have to pay homage to the titans of the engraving world.

It is difficult to get more heavyweight than the American Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The US government agency is responsible for making the famous green dollar bills, which are produced by letting ink settle in fine-line engravings on paper.

As Engravers Guild maintains a brisk production line in London, we have to admire how the Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces almost seven billion notes a year.

But today we have further reason to pay our respects. A few hours ago it was announced that it will start engraving a woman onto America’s paper currency for the first time in more than a century.

While we are sad to see old Mr Hamilton depart the $10 bill, we welcome the fact that a female face will soon take her place on the famous dollar notes.

Writing tennis history on a bottle

As Engravers Guild launches its online store, the team here was sad to see Lleyton Hewitt play at Queen’s Tennis Club for the last time.

However, not for long were we dispirited. Soon after the final shot was played, the tennis champion was presented with a memento to mark his four competition victories at the famous London venue.

On the lawns of West Kensington, Lleyton Hewitt was awarded a magnum of champagne, distinctive in its personal engraving on the face of the bottle.

While the champagne may not last long beyond the weekend, we’re sure the bottle at least will remain a treasured reminder of his enviable record at the competition.

Congratulations Lleyton on the impressive career at Queen’s.

Welcome

And we’re live!

Welcome to the new virtual store from Engravers Guild of London, the personalised gift retailer.

The team here has been working to answer a universal problem – “What can I buy for a gift?”

At Engravers Guild, our heritage of over 100 years in the jewellery and silver industry has taught us one thing – that the best gifts are the most personal gifts.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, the American poet, came close to agreeing with us when he said that “The greatest gift is a portion of thyself”.

So our store has been designed to offer engraved gifts that say something of the giver, are a reflection of the recipient, and hold lasting value.

The website has been created to offer a bespoke online gifting experience. From the unique engraving to the colour of ribbon, each one of our beautiful gifts has been created to embody our philosophy: Art in Gifting.

We invite you to our website, to try our preview tools and to view the engraving, wrapping and gift card before purchase.

Let us know what you think on our contact page – we’d be delighted to hear from you.
